BlueSky the alternative to X (Twitter) is now open for everyone to join
After almost a year operating solely through invitation codes, BlueSky has finally been released to the public. Founded by Jack Dorsey, one of the original co-founders of Twitter, BlueSky is emerging as one of the best alternatives to X.
Before being available to everyone, BlueSky already had more than 3 million registrations on the platform. This is a very low number if we compare it with the 130 million that Threads managed to accumulate since its launch. However, its first milestone has been to surpass one of the first Twitter alternatives, Mastodon, which reaches 1.8 million registered users.
Can BlueSky compete with Twitter?
After Elon Musk bought Twitter and renamed it X, a large number of users of the platform chose to try various alternatives. Although the majority of users remained faithful to the new version of the social network, others decided to explore different options in search of a more satisfactory experience.
Of all the alternatives, there were two that really stood out above the rest: Threads , the Meta-backed companion app for Instagram, and BlueSky , a new platform developed by one of Twitter’s co-founders.
At that time, BlueSky was taken as an outsider. This was because access was limited and you could only enter the platform through an invitation. It was officially launched as a social media service shortly after Musk purchased Twitter in October 2022.
However, BlueSky has a few features that make it special: an approach based on decentralization and possibly most relevantly, a connection to the old Twitter . In fact, one of the last actions of the old Twitter before being acquired by Musk was to grant Bluesky a financing of 13 million dollars.
How did Bluesky work when access was by invitation only?

Bluesky previously operated through an exclusive invitation system , meaning that only those who received an invitation code could enter the platform. Once the invitation was received, the user had to register with their personal information and create a profile to start using the social network.
Through the invitation, access was granted to the different functions of the platform, such as publishing content, following other users, and participating in conversations. This exclusive invitation system was implemented to control the growth of the platform and ensure a high-quality community.
By limiting access, the aim was to foster an environment in which users felt safer and more comfortable interacting with each other. Users who received an invitation were responsible for inviting other people, which contributed to the organic growth of the platform.
This exclusivity model helped generate curiosity and enthusiasm on the part of those who were not yet part of the social network, which contributed to achieving more than 3 million registrations in less than a year.
Is it too late for Bluesky to compete with Twitter?
Some social media experts consider it a mistake that Bluesky did not act when it had the opportunity and chose to maintain the invitation system for almost a year. Before Meta launched Threads in July, there was a time when Bluesky could have been X’s main competitor.
Currently, Threads has established itself as number two within its category, recently having around 100 million active users per month. Despite this, Bluesky has managed to form a solid base of active users, and now that the registry is public we will see how far this new platform is capable of growing.
