Is it worth buying a Samsung Galaxy A23 5G in 2024?

If you've been following our latest posts, I'm sure you're familiar with Samsung's Galaxy A series, a very well-built line of mid-range smartphones , especially in terms of performance. In this review we will do an in-depth review of the Samsung Galaxy A23 5G .
Samsung has long been an iconic part of the global smartphone market. In addition to the flagship products that it presents to us every year, the South Korean giant also offers basic devices that are excellent alternatives to what the main Chinese competitors, such as Xiaomi and Oppo, offer.
The Samsung Galaxy A23 5G garnered significant support from the community thanks to its unique features and extensive software compatibility. However, like many other budget-priced smartphones, it has some drawbacks.
This 5G smartphone was launched at an affordable price in July 2022 at an event held in the United States. The functionalities that this mobile device presents are difficult to find in other smartphones that are available in a similar price range. Let's start with the basics first: design and visualization.

Design and visualization
The design of the Samsung Galaxy A23 5G is very similar to that of the mobile devices presented in the Samsung A series line launched in early 2022. The back is made of plastic and has a camera protector that has five holes and soft edges that blend into the body.
The device is available in four color varieties including: peach, blue, black, and white. I currently have the melon-colored device and it looks very pleasing to the eye.
Because the back of this device shows a glossy finish, it is normal for it to be marked very easily by fingerprint smudges, but on the melon version of the Samsung Galaxy A23 5G it is almost not noticeable.
The device is large in size and the volume buttons are placed a few millimeters higher than other smartphones, so it could be a little uncomfortable for users with small hands. The power button located on the right side of the phone serves as the fingerprint sensor. This sensor is easily accessible, fast and reliable.
To the joy of Samsung users, the Galaxy A23 5G still retains the 3.5 mm headphone jack . Samsung's high-end A-series devices no longer offer a headphone jack.
Display and audio quality
At its launch we were expecting Samsung to provide us with an AMOLED screen, but to our surprise, the Samsung Galaxy A23 5G comes with a PLS TFT screen . Even its predecessor, the Galaxy A22, was equipped with a Super AMOLED display, but in 2022 the South Korean company decided to downgrade the display panel.
On the visual side, the screen resolution has improved to Full HD+ (1080 x 2408 px) compared to its predecessor that came with an HD+ screen. The 6.6-inch PLS LCD screen supports a refresh rate of up to 120Hz, which makes scrolling on the screen feel very smooth and fluid, which is good for a budget-priced smartphone.
The screen brightness is good enough for indoor use. However, it is not designed for outdoor use. I had a lot of difficulty using the device outdoors, especially in sunny conditions due to its low visibility. But this is not a problem for most of us, the solution is to find a shady place to continue using the phone.
As for audio quality, we find a single downward-facing speaker on the Samsung Galaxy A23 5G. The speaker is powerful enough to enjoy our favorite music without problems and the sound quality is average considering its price. But if you want a better listening experience, we recommend using headphones.
Cameras
When it comes to camera quality, the Samsung Galaxy A23 5G will not disappoint you. The Galaxy A23 features a quad-camera design with a 50MP optical image stabilizer (OIS) main camera , 5MP ultra-wide-angle lens, 2MP macro lens, and a 2MP depth lens. With built-in OIS, it is a mobile camera device for users with shaky hands.
The main camera produces images with well-balanced colors and plenty of detail during daylight. However, things change radically in low light conditions as this mobile device's night mode isn't the best, so while the phone produces decent low light photos, the light balance is slightly off. and, therefore, a lot of details are lost.
Moving to the front, the selfie camera is a standard 8MP which is average for budget-priced mobile devices, with a bokeh effect that is present in most smartphones these days.
The Samsung Galaxy A23 5G can record videos up to 1080p at 30fps . The main camera of this smartphone has optical image stabilization (OIS), but this is not a detail that makes a difference, since the videos appear somewhat unstable.
As for the video quality, the colors are not as attractive and the footage appears soft, which is to be expected for a mobile device in this price range.
Performance
The Samsung Galaxy A23 5G priced around $299, is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 695 5G chipset, which is based on a 6nm process node. You can find the same processor in the specifications of the Realme 9i and the Redmi Note 11 .
This mobile device features four high-performance Kryo 265 Gold (Arm Cortex-A73) cores running at up to 2.4 GHz and four fairly efficient Kryo 265 Silver (Arm Cortex-A53) cores running at up to 1.8 GHz. It also incorporates an Adreno 610 GPU.
In our case we have opted for the 4 GB variant with 64 GB storage. There is also a version available with 6GB RAM, which comes with 128GB storage.
It is important to note that some of our users have reported cases of poor performance on the Samsung Galaxy A23 5G, particularly when trying to multitask or too many apps are running in the background. This mainly occurs in versions with 4 GB of RAM, so we recommend opting for the 6GB RAM variant.
Battery life and operating system
The Galaxy A23 5G has an impressive 5000 mAh battery built in that easily offers up to 2 days of regular use. Charging speed is also excellent, thanks to 25W fast charging.
However, for those who constantly use their mobile devices for gaming, it is important to note that the phone gets quite hot during intensive gaming sessions. I noticed this when I was enjoying the popular game Genshin Impact, after a while, the phone was somewhat uncomfortable to hold due to the sensation of heat, so that is something to keep in mind.
During its launch, the device was introduced with Android 12, One UI 4.1, but Samsung recently rolled out an update to Android 13, One UI 5.0. In addition to this, the Galaxy A23 5G has already confirmed that this device will receive four years of security and operating system updates up to Android 15. This will guarantee its operation in the future, and an error-free experience, with a secure environment.

So, is the Samsung Galaxy A23 5G worth buying in 2024?
Despite featuring some solid specs, the Samsung Galaxy A23 5G may seem too slow for more demanding users. This is likely to be an inconvenience for those of us who use the 4 GB RAM version of the system, which is a lower number than the standard for smartphones presented today.
Fortunately, we have many alternatives to choose from. The Google Pixel 6A is a better choice over the Galaxy A23 5G in 2024, especially since its price dropped below $299 several times during the holiday season.
In 2024, smartphone manufacturers are sure to launch new devices at affordable prices, which will undoubtedly become more relevant. As a result, we recommend not purchasing the Samsung Galaxy A23 5G this year.
